Cake Smash in the Park
This was my first and for a long time will be a favorite milestone session of mine. The Johnston Family saw the perfect opportunity to have a family session for their daughter's first birthday and decided to include a cake smash!
What I love most about sessions are usually not just the pictures but the stories my families share with me that add so much more weight & meaning behind the celebration! In this photo I capture dad putting on her bib that they purchased during a mission trip before she was ever even conceived! What a full circle moment that makes your think, MAN! God is so good! He knows the desires of our hearts and responds! Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4)
Smashing the Cake
The cake baby girl got to smash was made by mama herself! She made a healthy cake low in sugar that she would enjoy! For cake smashes, I offer moms to either buy a simple HEB white birthday cake or make their own cakes to their liking for their kiddos cause mama knows best!
Backdrop for Cake Smash
In the photos you can see that although we are outdoors, I am using a white curtain backdrop that allows for some of that golden light from the sunset to create a glow in backdrop behind her which makes the photos look that more bright, soft, airy and whimsical!
The Authenticity of the Smash!
For the cake smash, I allow baby girl to have a true reaction and actually explore the cake herself. For her, that meant enjoying the icing, tipping the cake OFF the stand, and then eating the crumbs. This was an authentic response for her and, let's be honest, it made for such cute pictures! If babies are hesitant, than encouragement is definitely given to them pressing their hand into the cake or by handing them a piece!
Before and After Pics
One thing I loved getting were before and after pics of her cake showing where we started and what we ended up with it. It's like showing the evidence of her presence. "Baby Girl was here!" - Side note: Do you ever remember seeing notes like that in your school notebooks? What a time that was!
Cake Smash Family Session
With Milestone sessions, I always make sure to include time for family pictures with mom and dad! These are part of the memories that will live on for more than a lifetime. Because, although, baby girl will never remain 1-year-young, she will always be in this picture! 😊

Milestone sessions are offered for 6 month, 9 month and 12 month old babies! The session can be a minimalist theme such as the one seen in the photos here or can include personalized props that you wish to add!
